Cooper Stadium, the former home of the Columbus Clippers, has been in the city since the 1930s — but since 2008, it’s been empty.

Many plans in the past have been offered, but recently, one has picked up steam. It currently has approval from both the Southwest Area Commission, and most recently, the Columbus Development Commission. As it awaits being added to Columbus City Council’s agenda for final approval, we’re diving into what’s being proposed for this 90+ year-old, 47-acre site.

Under the proposal, Cooper Stadium, located at 1215 W. Mound St., would become a multi-use development with retail, residential, and office space.

In total, two mixed-use buildings, two retail buildings, apartments, and a warehouse would be added to the space, Columbus Underground reports. The construction process would be phased out, with a focus on building 100 residential units in the first phase.

The plans include preserving iconic features on the historic ground, including the grandstand along the third baseline. Other buildings, such as the two brick buildings, would also be renovated.

So who is behind this master plan? It’s Arshot Investment Corp. — and if that sounds familiar, it’s because they previously pitched a different project on this site in the last decade. In the 2010s, Arshot proposed a race track to replace Cooper Stadium, however, the Columbus-based development firm has since moved away from that idea.

THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by City Editor Mitch.

Editor’s pick: I used to live just a few blocks away from the Block’s Bagels on Broad Street so I need to investigate Fox’s Bagel & Deli. My go-to used to be a toasted everything bagel with avocado + vegan breakfast sausage.
