86,400 TikTok followers. 39,300 YouTube subscribers. 38,600 Instagram followers. What do you get when you combine those numbers with an Ohio State lacrosse midfielder? You get Mitchell Pehlke — a senior student-athlete at OSU who self-made his own online following through video creation. We sat down with Mitchell to discuss his journey to becoming a Buckeye athlete + his road to social media stardom.

How did you start playing lacrosse? đŸ„

I grew up with a stick in my hand. Seeing pictures and videos of my dad, who played at UVA and was a four-time All-American, playing Division I lacrosse has always been my dream.

How did you decide on Ohio State? 🌰

I had three offers to Hopkins, UVA, and Ohio State. I committed to OSU in October of 2015 and I’ve never looked back. I truly love this place.

How did you start to take off on social media? 📈

I started content creation in March 2016. I grew up watching YouTubers and my mom encouraged me to get involved with something other than lacrosse. I made my first video on March 5, 2016 called “Pehlke and Buck Barber” and it’s me giving my friend a bad haircut.

What are some of your top videos? đŸ“č

My most viewed video on YouTube is of me getting together with the No. 1 kid in the class of 2023 for lacrosse.

On TikTok I went viral because Emily Cole, who runs track at Duke, put out a funny TikTok saying she needed a formal date, and I responded saying I would go. She asked me to formal through TikTok and we ended up making it happen. I drove seven hours to Duke for her formal last December and then I made that into a YouTube video as well.

Winery planned for Old Hilliard

Winery
The Westwood Collective will be behind the project and think the winery could look similar to this rendering. | Rendering via The Westwood Collective.
This time next year, there could be a new winery in Old Hilliard at the corner of Grant and Franklin. This placement is within the city’s DORA.

Joe and Jennifer Hollabaugh, who are developing the 4,300-sqft winery with a 700-sqft covered patio, describe their approach as urban. This means raw ingredients like grapes and juice will be shipped in, but wine will be manufactured, sold, and sampled on-site.

Half of the large winery space will be used to manufacture the wine, and guests will be able to watch the winemaking process. The other half of the space will be used for tastings and light bites like charcuterie boards and breads.

The Hilliard Planning and Zoning Commission met last night to discuss reducing the required number of parking spaces, which will be mandatory before the project can advance.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Hanna.

Editor’s pick: Happy Friday, CBUS. This Saturday, I’ll be color commentating (which is essentially adding extra value + insights to a sports broadcast) for the OSU women’s volleyball game. If you haven’t made it to a game this season, I highly recommend it. The Covelli Center is such an amazing arena and the volleyball team is really fun to watch. If you decide to stream it on BTN+ instead, you’ll hear me in action. 🏐
