Hot Chicken Takeover announced it was opening a new location in Grandview + it didn’t take long before some HCT spice was added to the building.

This location at 1417 W. 5th Ave. features the Love Thy Neighbor mural by local artist Carly Mitchell. So, when the company wanted it updated, they asked the expert — Carly. Now, the building is sporting an updated mural ahead of its expected December opening. We sat down with Carly to learn more.

What was your inspiration?

When I created this mural, it was the summer of 2020 so the pandemic was still fresh in our lives. Many people struggled because of the pandemic, so I wanted to communicate a positive message that makes everyone feel loved no matter who they are. Not only does the message make people feel good, but the colors brighten up an intersection surrounded by gray parking lots.

How did you change the new mural?

When I learned the building was being taken over by another restaurant, my first thought was, “Oh no, the mural is going to be painted over.” I was so relieved when Hot Chicken Takeover approached me about keeping the mural and wanting to freshen it up. ... I kept the original inspiration in mind, but my focus was on how to convey the personality of the Hot Chicken Takeover brand. ... The asterisk after Love Thy Neighbor* is a subtle nod to how the company goes beyond fried chicken and stands for what they believe in.

Where can we find your work?

My current public murals can be found at Land-Grant, Salon Local, ... and on the windows of Train 24/7 Fitness House on Kenny Road. I’m most active on Instagram @carlycreationsstudio. You can see my website at carlycreations.studio [or] my Etsy shop.

The NCAA Women’s Final Four is returning to Columbus, but don’t worry, you’ve got some time —1,592 days to be exact.

On Monday, the NCAA announced its next slate of host cities for the Women’s Final Four + Nationwide Arena was named as the host for the final games in 2027. And if you can’t wait until then, Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland will be home to the 2024 Women’s Final Four.

The Women’s Final Four was last in Columbus in 2018 where the Greater Columbus Sports Commission reports the city netted $21.7 million in visitor spending. The game was also one for the record books as Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale nailed a jump shot with just one second left in overtime to win the championship against UConn.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Mitch.

Editor’s pick: I’m headed back to my hometown to relive my glory days of youth sports with a Turkey Bowl flag football game on Friday. If it’s anything like middle school, I’ll make sure the bench doesn’t float away. 🏈
