Hot Chicken Takeover announced it was opening a new location in Grandview + it didnât take long before some HCTspice was addedto the building.
This location at 1417 W. 5th Ave. features the Love Thy Neighbormural by local artist Carly Mitchell. So, when the company wanted it updated, they asked the expert â Carly. Now, the building is sporting an updated mural ahead of its expected December opening. We sat down with Carly to learn more.
What was your inspiration?
When I created this mural, it was the summer of 2020 so the pandemic was still fresh in our lives. Many people struggled because of the pandemic, so I wanted to communicate a positive message that makes everyone feel loved no matter who they are. Not only does the message make people feel good, but the colors brighten up an intersection surrounded by gray parking lots.

How did you change the new mural?
When I learned the building was being taken over by another restaurant, my first thought was, âOh no, the mural is going to be painted over.â I was so relieved when Hot Chicken Takeover approached me about keeping the mural and wanting to freshen it up. ... I kept the original inspiration in mind, but my focus was on how to convey the personality of the Hot Chicken Takeover brand. ... The asterisk after Love Thy Neighbor* is a subtle nod to how the company goes beyond fried chicken and stands for what they believe in.
