When we asked about what new content you wanted, many readers suggested activities for older adults.

The City of Columbus Recreation and Parks department has a Fifty Plus program with a variety of activities for adults that are — you guessed it — 50+. Let’s dive in.

Fifty Plus memberships

It’s free to become a member, which will unlock access to senior fitness centers, sports programs, and art classes. Members also get first priority for educational trips.

Here are some of the 50+ centers to choose from:

Adult-only activities

Browse some of the 50+ offerings, including classes like:
  • Clay and pottery
  • Bingo
  • Walking groups
  • Ballroom dancing
  • Acrylic and watercolor painting

Senior food programs

The Dodge and Thompson Community Centers offer Senior Food Boxes that can be picked up once or twice per month for those who qualify. It’s recommended to call each center to verify edibility in advance.

Volunteering

The Golden Hobby Gift Shop — an arts and consignment shop at 549 Franklin Ave. — is filled with ceramics, quilts, and paintings all made by local seniors.

Seniors can make art for the store, or volunteer to staff the shop along with other Columbus Recreation and Parks Department employees.

Walk With a Doc

Seniors are encouraged to join the free neighborhood walking group that allows community members to walk alongside a local doctor and chat about health.

There are five different locations available for the program, and the meeting times and dates vary per location.

If you’re looking to give the gift of an experience for Mother’s Day, we’ve got you covered.

    Candle making

Give your mom a gift card to Penn & Beech so they can custom make their own candle. There are locations in the Short North, Worthington, and Grandview. We checked it out for ourselves — here’s how it works.

    DIY crafting

Make a reservation at Makers Social to create a project ranging from jewelry to home decor. Watch our experience at the craft bar to see how it works.

    Concerts

Whether your mom loves Lionel Richie or Kacey Musgraves, there’s an upcoming concert to choose from — so you can treat them to a ticket.

    Spa day

Spoil your mom with a massage or facial at the following spots:
