Earlier in the summer, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Amazon Web Services would invest $7.8 billion into central Ohio through expanded data centers. Now, we have the first piece of the puzzle in this $3.5 billion investment plan.
Approved investment
“We are proud to reinforce our long-term commitment to the State of Ohio with plans to invest an additional $3.5 billion in New Albany by 2030,” stated Director of Econocmic Development Roger Wehner in a release .
The investment, approved by New Albany City Council, will create five new data centers in New Albany that will assist the AWS technology in online shopping, streaming, video games, and music.
Local impact
The New Albany community will benefit from the increased tax revenue through infrastructure investments and additional support of schools and first responders, according to the release.
“Our community stands poised to support AWS in addressing the global surge in cloud computing needs,” stated New Albany Mayor Sloan Spalding in a release. “New Albany is dedicated to fostering economic growth and creating a business-friendly environment for the benefit of our citizens and broader community.”
Statewide impact
In addition to benefiting New Albany, AWS’s investments in Ohio have had the following impact:
- $2.2 billion in economic benefit
- 1,000+ jobs across all of its central Ohio centers
- 3,500+ local jobs supported annually
