Construction season: Development updates in Columbus for November 2023

As build proposals move forward + construction projects begin, these are the top stories from August for the Columbus development scene.

Projects

A playground just for adults
  • From pickleball courts to designated fire pits, we can’t wait for events to start at this new playground this October. The project takes over an empty lot on McDowell and W. State streets, and construction begins soon.
Three-for-one project in old bank building
  • Construction is underway on three new concepts in the former Galleria on S. Third St. that will include a biergarten, a tapas restaurant, and a speakeasy.
Grand finale in Grandview
  • Crews began demolition on a Grandview apartment on W. 5th Avenue earlier this month to clear way for a $40 million mixed-use building in the future.

Proposals

New event space for OSU
  • Back-to-school isn’t the only big news item this month; A&R Creative Group has its eyes set on connecting Midway and Ethyl & Tank with a new 7,000-sqft event space.
Airport’s $2 billion terminal
  • Local officials are planning a massive overhaul of John Glenn International Airport + hope to begin construction in 2024 and finish in 2029.
From office district to apartment space
  • A large plot of commercial land in Dublin could become mixed-use apartments after Pizzuti, a Columbus-based developer, proposed a nearly 20-acre plan with 330 total apartment units.
More apartments proposed for campus
  • A Chicago-based developer wants to bring 200 new apartment units to The Ohio State University campus on E. 16th Avenue.

  • Starting in October, residents will begin moving into Topiary Park Crossing, a new apartment complex offering a range of affordable units relative to the median income of the area.

  • A 417-acre, mixed-use project was proposed in New Albany near Intel’s semiconductor factory. If approved, developers designed five distinct districts for the project: residential, industrial, commercial, parks, and open space. (Columbus Business First)

  • New year, new announcer. That’s the motto for Ohio Stadium after Tom Snyder was hired as the in-stadium announcer, replacing the beloved and late Bob Kennedy. Tom is a Columbus resident and most recently was the director of digital communications at St. Francis DeSales High School. (10TV)

  • The Ohio State University will pay new president Ted Carter $1.1 million per year, according to details of his new contract. This places Carter as the second-highest paid president in the Big Ten, just shy of the University of Maryland’s president.
