If we know one thing about Columbus: We are passionate sports fans.

So, you can understand why we are so excited about the newest professional volleyball team, Columbus Fury. The season begins on Friday, Feb. 16 in Orlando, but our eyes are set on the home opener: Wednesday, Feb. 21 against the Ohama Supernovas.

This game is the first-ever home game for Fury, marking a historic moment for the new team. It will be played at Nationwide Arena at 7 p.m. and live streamed on Stadium. Tickets range from $28 to $150+.

Of course, we had to scan the roster to see if there were any Buckeyes. Spoiler alert: There are three.
  • No. 13 Ashley Wenz | Position: Opposite Hitter | Wenz spent four years with Ohio State, 2014-17, and earned an All-Big Ten honorable mention in her senior year.
  • No. 18 Jenaisya Moore | Position: Opposite Hitter | Moore spent four years with Ohio State, 2019-2022, and was an OSU Scholar Athlete three years in a row.
  • No. 3 Valeria Leon | Position: Lobero | Leon was a star in her four years at Ohio State, 2013-16, and finished her career as the all-time leader in total digs and digs per set.

The team is head coached by Ángel Pérez, a former international player who is considered one of the best male volleyball players of all-time. No biggie. He also has experience as a coach, winning back-to-back Puerto Rican Women’s Superior Volleyball League championships.

Fury is part of the Professional Volleyball Federation which was launched in February 2023. It quickly gained star power, with investments from professional athletes like Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Can’t make it on Wednesday, Feb. 21? Fury will return to Nationwide on Monday, Feb. 26 to face Vegas Thrill at 7 p.m.

The only thing easier than drinking local beer is voting for it.

USA Today is back with its 10Best Awards and Columbus was nominated as one of the top 20 beer cities in the US. No surprise to us — now it’s time to clutch a victory. You can vote once per day from now until Monday, Feb. 26 at noon. The winner will be announced on Friday, March 8.

The Arch City is currently 9th on the leader board, out ranking metros like New York City (20th) and Los Angeles (19th). However, there’s still work to be done in order to beat these cities:
  • 8th: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • 7th: Ashville, North Carolina
  • 6th: Grand Rapids, Michigan
  • 5th: Jacksonville, Florida
  • 4th: Indianapolis, Indiana
  • 3rd: Richmond, Virginia
  • 2nd: Fort Collins, Colorado
  • 1st: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

From the editor
My previous job before CBUStoday was at the Marion Star in Marion, Ohio. I still remember when the Groundhog Day story was handed out. I dodged the assignment, meaning my co-worker had to make her way into Marion before the sun rose to see if a groundhog saw its shadow. Journalism is a weird job sometimes, but I love it.
