When people decide to get into running, it can be an uphill battle without some help.
Hi, CBUS — Senior City Editor Mitch here. I started walking and running this year, and after attempting an outdoor run recently, I quickly learned how challenging it can be. What routes are safe? Which paths have the least amount of incline? And don’t get me started about all the different types of shoes on the market...
That’s why running clubs are so helpful. These groups of ardent athletes can help newbies with questions + provide expertise to longtime runners. Here are five to check out around town.
Make friends + set new personal records when you join clubs like the Columbus Running Company. | Photo via @columbusrunning
Columbus Running Company
This group is ensuring that all suburbs in CBUS have a club, ranging from the Short North to Grove City. Each weekend, you decide your distance + CRC will provide the route and community, free of charge. Routes can vary from pub runs to indoor track walks.
Columbus Westside Running Club
If your weekends are too hectic for working out, this free club offers 6:15 p.m. meet-ups on Tuesday + Thursday each week. Tuesday runs are one-mile loops around Westgate Shelterhouse and Thursdays are two or four mile runs at Battelle Darby Metro Park.
German Village Running Club
Consistency is key for GVRC, which runs a 5K starting and finishing at The Sycamore each week. Those interested in joining must fill out a survey first.

Grandview Running Club
This club updates its plans on Facebook and Strava, a popular paid-membership app. The group meets on Tuesday evenings, and frequently runs past well-known businesses.
Short North Running Club
Who said running can’t be fun? Each week at 6:45 p.m., this group meets at a Short North bar then sets off on a three to five mile run. Afterwards, group members enjoy drinks and dinner at a restaurant.
