The Columbus Zoo staff believed their gorilla Sully to be male. That is... until she gave birth.
Sully unexpectedly gave birth to a healthy baby girl, but how did the zookeepers not notice she was pregnant? Or that she was female?
“It’s hard to tell the sex of younger gorillas,” said a staffer with the Zoo in a news release. “Until about age 8, males and females are about the same size, and they don’t have prominent sex organs. Gorillas rarely show outward signs of pregnancy because the newborns are smaller than human babies and gorillas naturally have large abdomens.”
The Zoo is thrilled about the surprise, and guests can now celebrate the birth by visiting the indoor gorilla habitat starting today at 11 a.m.
