Happy 614 Day, Columbus

It’s just Friday for the rest of the world. But in Columbus, it’s a local holiday.

Happy 614 Day. Today — Friday, June 14 — is a celebration of all things local in honor of our area code. It’s no secret that we love our city, and we wanted to share how that love came to be. Plus, we’ll connect you to the best citywide party for the special occasion.

I fell in love with Columbus the minute I moved here in 2014. I was just 19 years old and living in my first-ever apartment at University Village while I attended The Ohio State University. And since then, the city has gone through many forms for me.

At first, Columbus was like a playground with fun bars, big name restaurants, and popular retailers. And over time, those have been replaced with coffee roasters, hyperlocal eateries, and vintage vendors at pop-ups. Now, Columbus is simply home — somewhere to play, just as much as somewhere to work and live.

I said goodbye to my hometown of Bowling Green and moved to Columbus in 2014 to begin my freshman year at Ohio State. As a former Michigan fan (I know, I’m sorry) I instantly became a die hard Buckeye after my first game day experience in Ohio Stadium.

I quickly fell in love with more than just the sports teams — the diversity of festivals, concerts, nightlife, and top-notch restaurants are some of my favorite things about the city. So many of my dreams have come true in Columbus, as it’s a hub for growth and opportunity.

Party time

You need to check out the official 614 Day Block Party. This open street festival features vendors for shopping, live music, food trucks, and beer around State Street and Town Street, plus between McConnell Avenue and Lucas Avenue.

They say cats are shy creatures, but one Columbus brewery cat is happy to soak up the spotlight.

Horatio, the beloved assistant manager cat at Seventh Son Brewing Co., is now on display as a portrait inside John Glenn International Airport. The artwork was created by Columbus-based artist Charlotte Belland and it’s a part of the airport’s “Pets Together” series.

“The portraits invite airport guests to read the descriptions, learning about the pets’ humans, their contributions to Columbus communities, and the causes they believe in,” reads Belland’s artist statement.

The exhibit is open to travelers from now through July, featuring dozens of Belland’s creations.

“The disarming friendly faces of the pets encourages all people to pause any preconceived notions they hold and to take a moment to reflect,” stated Belland. “The pairing of sweet, happy pets with LGBTQ+ people & allies and their causes is primed for a variety of reactions.”

Happy 614 Day. I celebrated my love of the city by picking up a library card from the Columbus Metropolitan Library. And now I’m reading “Tigerland” by Wil Haygood, a Columbus-based author. The book is about the East High School basketball team in the 1960s and their historic run that gave our local community hope amid a time of social unrest.
