Columbus makes a lot of great craft beer — in fact, USA Today 10Best named it the third best beer city in the US in 2024. Local brewers are constantly tapping their creative juices to drum up crafty collaborations, standout recipes, and fun names for their frothy masterpieces.
We’re raising a glass to five CBUS-centric brews with names that draw inspiration from our city’s history, communities, and culture.
614 Lager, Wolf’s Ridge Brewing
Our city’s area code and OH pride is strong in this beer.
Style + flavor: This 4.2% ABV light lager only has 110 calories, but packs more flavor than one might think. Beer enthusiasts say it’s lightly dry-hopped with Huell Melon hops, giving it subtle notes of melon and citrus.
Arch City Lager, Arch City Tavern
The tavern’s house brew gives a nod to one of our city’s fun nicknames inspired by the arches of High Street + the Short North.
Style + flavor: This 5.5% ABV amber lager goes down real smooth; try it at half-off during happy hour, Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m.
Columbus Lager, Columbus Brewing Co.
This beer’s name gets straight to the point — and we respect that. With the can boasting brewery’s tagline — “The Pride of Columbus since 1988” — this brew won Bronze at the 2022 World Beer Cup.
Style + flavor: This 4.6% ABV contemporary, American-style lager gets its clean + crisp flavor profile from Pilsner and Vienna malts, Tettnang hops, and German lager yeast.
For Columbus Black Lager, Land Grant Brewing
This beer was made for dedicated supporters of the Columbus Crew and is available during late soccer season at the Land Grant taproom and Lower.com field. Score.
Style + flavor: This 4.8% ABV dark brew features Tettnang and Magnum hops and goes down crisp, toasty + smooth.
Stone Fort Oat Brown Ale, Seventh Son Brewing
The name of this brew pays homage to the mysterious Old Stone Fort overlooking the Tuscarawas River, believed to be the oldest building in Ohio.
Style + flavor: This 5.25% ABV toasty brown ale has notes of light roast coffee, cocoa leather, and biscuit. The brewery says it pairs well with smoked meats, grilled seafood, and aged cheeses.
Cheers to you, Cap City.
